Cypress mulch is no longer available from Elite. The natural oils that made cypress so good at keeping insects and termites away are also highly flammable, and cypress supply hasn’t been the same since the last major bushfires — our supplier can no longer get it to us reliably. It’s still one of the most-asked-for mulches, so here’s what we recommend instead, matched to why people wanted cypress:
Hardwood Chip Mulch — the closest all-rounder: coarse, long-lasting, stays put on beds and slopes, holds moisture and suppresses weeds.
Pine Bark 14mm — decorative and slow to break down; holds its colour and shape in feature beds.
Elite Eco Mulch — the economical choice for covering larger areas for weed and moisture control.
Softfall Mulch — if you used cypress chip under play equipment, this is the certified play-area product (ask us to confirm the right depth for your fall height).
People sought out cypress mulch because it broke down slowly, so it needed topping up less often; it held a warm golden-to-reddish-brown colour instead of fading quickly to grey; it locked moisture into the soil and suppressed weeds; and it carried a fresh, natural aroma. The same natural oils gave cypress a reputation for resisting rot and deterring termites, which made it popular around timber homes and in native, low-water gardens.

Longevity & staying power — Hardwood Chip Mulch or Pine Bark 14mm. Both are coarse and slow to break down. No organic mulch is termite-proof, so keep any mulch clear of house foundations.
