What is 80/20 turf underlay?
An 80/20 blend is roughly 80% washed sand to 20% quality soil — enough organic matter to feed the lawn, enough sand to drain freely so roots don't sit wet in our clay soils. It's the reliable base for buffalo lawns like Sir Walter, plus kikuyu and couch. See top dressing & turf underlay.
How much underlay do I need?
Spread 75–100 mm before laying turf. At 75 mm, 1 m³ covers ~13 m²; at 100 mm, ~10 m². A 100 m² lawn needs about 7.5–10 m³.

Preparing your lawn
Clear weeds and old turf, cultivate the surface, spread underlay to an even 75–100 mm, level and lightly compact, then lay turf within a day and water in. On heavy Penrith clay, work in a little gypsum first to improve drainage.
