Boral Blue Circle Cement Guide: Which Bag for Your Job

Which Boral Blue Circle cement do you need? Plain-English guide to GP, grey, white & off-white cements, Concrete Mix, Rapid Set, Sand & Cement, lime & clay.

Standing in front of a wall of cement bags and not sure which one to grab? Elite Sand & Soil stocks the full Boral Blue Circle range — and the bags aren’t interchangeable. The right one depends on whether you’re pouring a slab, setting a fence post, rendering a wall or bedding pavers. Here’s the plain-English version.

Straight cements (you add the sand and/or aggregate)

These are pure binders — mix them with sand for mortar and render, or sand and aggregate for concrete.

  • General Purpose (GP) Cement and Grey Cement — the everyday workhorse: Type GP to AS 3972 for general mortar, render and concrete on residential and commercial jobs.
  • Off White Cement — a lighter shade than grey (midway to white) for render and feature work where you want a softer colour.
  • Southern White Cement — pure, brilliant-white Type GP cement, colour-controlled for feature concrete and white render.
  • Special Purpose Cement — a blended Type GB/LH/SR cement with low heat of hydration and resistance to sulfates and salt, for marine environments and mass concrete.

Pre-mixed — just add water

Pre-blended bags with the sand (and aggregate) already in. Ideal for DIY and small jobs.

  • Concrete Mix — aggregate, sand and cement for all general concrete: paths, slabs and footings.
  • HS Concrete Mix (50 MPa) — high-strength concrete with fast early strength where extra durability matters.
  • Rapid Set No-Mix Concrete — for fence posts and post holes: no mixing, just add water and it sets fast.
  • Sand & Cement — pre-blended mortar for patching, bedding pavers, pointing and landscaping.

Mortar additives

  • General Purpose Lime — hydrated lime (AS 1672.1) that improves the workability and water retention of cement mortars and renders.
  • Premium Clay — a fine kaolin (ball) clay plasticiser that makes render and mortar more workable.

Frequently asked questions

What’s the difference between cement and concrete? Cement is the binder; concrete is cement plus sand and aggregate. “Concrete Mix” already has all three — you just add water.

Which Boral product for a fence post? Rapid Set No-Mix Concrete — tip it into the hole dry, add water, done.

How do I get a white finish? Use Southern White (brilliant white) or Off White cement instead of standard grey.
