Kiln Dried Sand is a fine, dry, silica‑based sand that has been oven‑dried to remove all moisture.
Its free‑flowing nature makes it perfect for sweeping into the joints of paving to lock pavers in place and prevent shifting.
The dry consistency ensures it flows easily into even the narrowest gaps for a neat, professional finish.

What is kiln dried sand?

Kiln dried sand is a fine silica sand that has been oven-dried and screened so it is completely dry and flows freely. Because it pours cleanly into narrow gaps, it is the go-to sand for filling paver joints, topping up artificial grass and dressing tennis courts.

What kiln dried sand is used for

• Paver jointing (gap sand) — swept into the joints between pavers to lock them in place and help resist weeds and ants.
• Artificial grass infill — brushed into synthetic turf to weigh it down, keep the blades upright and protect the backing.
• Tennis courts and synthetic surfaces — dressed onto the surface for grip and stability.
• Block paving — the finishing sand for driveways and paths.

How to use it

With pavers or turf dry, spread the kiln dried sand over the surface and sweep it into the joints or fibres with a stiff broom, topping up until the gaps are full. Being dry, it runs straight in — unlike damp sand, which clumps and clogs the joints.

Why kiln dried and not ordinary sand?

The difference is moisture, and it changes everything. Damp sand bridges and clumps in a narrow paver joint, sitting in the top few millimetres where the first rain flushes it out. Kiln dried sand is oven-dried until bone dry, so it runs to the bottom of the gap and packs the full joint. There is no substitute — ordinary sand dried in the sun is never dry enough.

How much do I need?

It depends on joint width and depth. As a rough guide, one 20kg bag fills the joints on around 5–8 square metres of standard paving with tight 2–5mm gaps; wide or deep joints chew through considerably more. For artificial turf infill, work on roughly 4–5kg per square metre depending on pile height. Buy a bag more than the maths says — you will use it on the first top-up.

Getting a good result

Only sand when the pavers and joints are completely dry. Spread, then sweep diagonally across the joints with a stiff broom until they are full, compact or plate-vibrate if you can, and top up. Expect to re-sand every year or two as weather and washing gradually pull sand out of the joints.

The right sand at each layer

Frequently asked questions

Is kiln dried sand the same as gap sand?

Broadly, yes — gap sand and jointing sand are kiln dried silica sands sold for sweeping into paver joints. Some branded gap sands add a binder that sets when wetted. Plain kiln dried sand stays loose, which makes future top-ups and paver lifting easier.

How much kiln dried sand do I need per square metre?

For standard paving with tight 2 to 5 millimetre joints, one 20 kilogram bag fills around 5 to 8 square metres. Wider or deeper joints use considerably more. For artificial grass infill, allow roughly 4 to 5 kilograms per square metre depending on pile height.

Can I use kiln dried sand for artificial grass?

Yes — it is the standard infill for synthetic turf. Brushed into the pile, it weighs the turf down, keeps the blades standing upright and protects the backing from UV and wear. Apply it in dry conditions and brush against the pile direction.

Why can't I use regular sand between pavers?

Regular sand holds moisture, so it clumps and bridges in the joint instead of running to the bottom. The joint ends up part-filled, pavers rock and the sand washes out with the first rain. Kiln dried sand is bone dry and flows into even 2 millimetre gaps.
